Choosing a world tourer.

Choosing a new bike is a daunting albeit exciting process. With the rise in popularity of 'singletrack', gravel and cyclocross cycling, there is now a plethora of excellent bicycles on the market for those of us looking to ride of the tarred roads and beaten tracks and into the great unknown.

I have been riding my trusty Boardman Team CX since the summer of 2014. I named it after Don Quixote's trusted steed 'Rociante', and it has proven to be an invaluable companion during my initiation into the world of long distance cycle touring. Rocinante is derived from the Spanish 'Rocín' and 'ante' meaning 'work horse' and 'previously' respectively. Indicative of the hacks previous life, before he became sidekick to the clumsy knight-errant.

The CX has certainly earned its name, carrying me from one quixotic adventure to another in the last 2 years. However, after a frightening wheel failure on the foothills of the Catalan pyrenees, it is increasingly evident that a more appropriate bike is needed as my daydreams become ever more ambitious.

Working to the following criteria, I have compiled a list of the different options I am considering. Let me know what you think!

Criteria:

  • Preferably under £2000.
  • Capable in more extreme off road tracks.
(This is the main reason I've decided to move away from the CX category).
  • Multiple eyelets
(specifically under down tube and on the fork).
  • Ability to load gear on front as well as rear racks.
  • Low gearing for mountain climbs on a loaded bike.
